Dear Professor Kirkpatrick,

Allow me to stand corrected. And thanks for that correction. Happy to hear that affairs were discouraged. That wasn't the vibe among the students, though. And, yes, I graduated, class of 1978.

My best to you and yours,

Joseph Kaufman

I taught at Bennington for 27 years. Kaufman says that at Bennington affairs between faculty and students were encouraged. Nonsense. They were tolerated. Few years before he got there, a faculty member was fired for manipulating his students into having sex with him. Another faculty member was warned he'd be fired if it happened again, namely, getting a student pregnant. Some years after Kaufman left (he doesn't say that he ever graduated), the faculty got together a sexual harrassment policy because too many students thought that they had to trade sex for good comments on their work.

I love your memories of Mr. Benson. I write a real estate column for the Thousand Islands Sun our local paper and since Thanksgiving is just around the corner I was writing about thanking someone who made a great impression or a difference in your life. Mr. Benson came to mind. As I was searching to see if I could find out if he was still in Pittsfield I cam across your post. You say it oh, so well.
